Some Basics of Search Engine Optimization

As a result of the ever increasing popularity of the Internet, the number of people turning on to the online market for purchasing goods and services are rising. The challenge before any business is to attract this rising number of prospective online customers to their websites. Search engine optimization is defined as the process of increasing the number of visitors to a web site by ranking high in the search results.

In the main, search engine optimization consists of two types of techniques - on page SEO techniques and off page SEO techniques. On page SEO aims at increasing the quality of the content of the website whereas off page SEO aims at link building. Though the techniques adopted by both these methods are different, they both have the same ultimate goal - increasing the position of the website in the search engine results page.

Finding the right keywords for the purpose of on page search engine optimization is a very important step. Keyword research involves finding different keyword properties like popularity, competition, keyword effectiveness index or KEI, keyword effectiveness rank or KER etc. Once the keywords are finalised, they should be used to create good and effective content, used in the meta contents, title tags, heading tags, anchor texts, image alt tags and file names.

Off page search engine optimization involves the pursuance of link building strategies. It mainly include techniques like directory submission, search engine submissions, participating in forums and blogs, submitting press releases and classifieds, article submission, link exchange and other similar techniques. The main aim of off page search engine optimization is enhancing the link popularity of a website.

Search engine optimization is not a one-time effort, but a continuous process involving careful use of diverse techniques and meticulous tracking of results. There are a lot of companies around the world who provide services. But before choosing a particular company, you should make sure that they are not following any unethical or black hat SEO techniques for optimizing websites.
